“Every great dream begins with a dreamer”. I am Brynn Hicks, an assistant makeup artist, and an aspiring actor and singer. I have always been a dreamer, focussing on accomplishing every goal I have dreamt of.
My family owns an international dude ranch in Texas. As a child I worked there since before I can remember. My uncle was a part of the country music and entertainment industry and he encouraged me to grow as a performer and artist. He wrote and produced many theatrical performances and floor shows that I always played a role in. From an exceedingly early age I knew I wanted to be in field of arts and creativity. I attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, which is about an hour outside of Houston. I my graduated class of 2015 with my BFA in Theatre in acting and directing. During college, I became interested in Scenic and Production Design and Stage Makeup, taking classes on each and learning everything I could. Directly after college I got into creating films with a brilliant young writer, director, and actor; Chasen Parker. I started as a set decorator and assistant to the production designer and worked my way up to be the production designer for his short film “American Fishtrap,” which was accepted into the Cannes short film corner.
In October of 2018 I moved from Texas to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film. I knew it was a tough town, and I really wanted to begin working in some aspect of the Hollywood industries. I applied to be an assistant to people working in various industries like music, tv, film, and makeup. After about two months I was hired by Celebrity Makeup Artist, Ash K Holm and have been assisting her since. Working for Ash has been a dream come true, and there are still days I have to pinch myself. Ash has taught me so much about myself, the industry, and life in Los Angeles. One of the most important lessons that I have learned from her is to really be aware of who you surround yourself with and what you give your energy to.
A makeup artist assistant job description differs from each artist that you assist, but some of the responsibilities would include bringing in their kit, setting up, cleaning and sanitizing their tools, holding or handing a palette to them, or even creating content for social media. There are also times that you do personal errands for them. Again, every single artist is different and expects different things out of you. Some really important qualities for someone who is looking for a job assisting a makeup artist would be availability, organization, communication skills, and discretion.
It can be hard to balance your personal life and grow yourself as an artist while assisting, but it is an incredible experience that I wouldn’t trade for the world. Some of the clients that I have worked with are Khloe and Kim Kardashian, Shay Mitchell, Camila Cabello, Bebe Rexha, Becky G, Ariel Winter, Ashley Graham, and many more. If you don’t know where to start in the makeup industry, and want to become a makeup artist, my advice to you is to reach out to your favorite makeup artists that is doing exactly what you want to do and see if they are looking for an assistant. The answer is always no if you don’t ask.
As is with most people in the world, this pandemic really shook up my life. I took a break from work and went to my home in Texas and spent precious time with my family. I will be forever grateful for the time that I spent at home. It helped me to grow both emotionally and mentally. I am back in LA working on makeup and beginning to slowly focus on my career as an artist (and not JUST in makeup.)
As soon as I get up in the morning, I read affirmations to stay inspired and positive. Some of these include-
“My thoughts are filled with positivity and my life is plentiful with prosperity. My voice matters, my opinions count and so do others.”
“My ability to conquer my challenges is limitless. My intension to succeed is limitless.”
“I am strong. I am kind. I am love”
Thank You, Brynn, for sharing your wonderful journey and such amazing pieces of advice with us!
